APT 2002 OPENING EVENTS

    • Introduction

    • Three stimulating days of free talks, discussions and performances will be staged to mark the opening of APT 2002 from Friday 13 September to Sunday 15 September.

      The APT 2002 Opening Events program features:

      • ‘Pasifika Divas’, a night of Pacific body adornment, design and performance presented by the bombastic and sexy ‘Divas’;
      • artists' talks each morning;
      • lectures and daily panel discussions in the afternoons; and
      • performances at various times.

      APT 2002 also sees the much anticipated return of Kids' APT which presents unique interactive artworks and activities for young visitors and families. As a special event Kids' APT also incorporates a children's cultural festival over the summer holidays from January 11 to 25 January.

    • Public Programs, including films, lectures, performances and forums will continue throughout the exhibition.

      Thinking Through Exhibitions: Experimental Chinese Art and 'Experimental Exhibitions' of Chinese Art by Wu Hung

      2.30–3.30pm

      Professor Wu Hung is the Harrie A. Vanderstappen Distinguished Professor, the Director, Center for the Art of East Asia and Consulting Curator, Smart Museum of Art, The University of Chicago, USA. He has maintained an outstanding academic and publishing career in the area of contemporary, modern and pre-modern Chinese art.

      Pasifika Divas and Polytoxic

      3.30–4.30pm

      Members of the Pasifika Divas will perform with local group Polytoxic, featuring contemporary Samoan dancers Efeso Fa’anana and Lisa Fa’alafi.

      Small Gesture in Specific Places: Communication and Topography by Dr Nikos Papastergiadis

      2.30–3.30pm

      Dr Nikos Papastergiadis is currently Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Australian Centre, University of Melbourne. He has contributed to many academic and public panels on contemporary art and the impact of migration.

      Soul Textured Stories : Pattern & Text in the Art on Pacific Skin by Ngahuia Te Awekotuku

      4.00–5.00pm

      Professor Ngahuia Te Awekotuku is currently Research Associate in the Maori & Psychology Research Unit, University of Waikato. She has presented numerous papers at international conferences and is a member of the Council of Creative New Zealand.

      Barnaby Ralph

      3.30–4.30pm

      Brisbane-based recorder player Barnaby Ralph will perform modern works by Japanese, Taiwanese and Australian composers on a variety of instruments.

      Adorn yourself with a lei and lavalava and ‘Get down with the Brown’!

      The bombastic and sexy Pasifika Divas performance is a major component of the APT 2002 Opening Events program. Pasifika Divas brings together a collective including fa'afafine (Samoan for ‘like a woman’) performers, designers and artists from Pacific Islander communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.

    • Be delighted with Pele the Fire Goddess’ costume and the striking body adornments of Sofia Tekela-Smith, discover local Pacific talent, and groove to Polytoxic and the smooth beats of DJs.

      Nam June Paik and Korean Shamanism by Kim Hong-Hee

      1.30–2.30pm

      Professor Kim Hong-Hee is currently Director of Ssamzie Space in Seoul and Adjunct Professor in Art History of Hong-ik University. She is a curator, art historian and critic. Professor Kim is recognised internationally as an authority on Nam June Paik, a key artist of APT 2002.

      Ancestral Plane

      3.30–4.30pm

      Ancestral Plane is a cross-cultural music project. Members of the group bring together a wealth of musical experience from their various cultural backgrounds. They include Motoyuki Niwa /percussion, Art Nickolls/didgeridoo (Yidaki), Francis Gilfedder/ woodwind and Tom Mikula/percussion.
