[ Home | Media Information ] For immediate release Virtual Triennial showcases contemporary art in cyberspace For the first time, visitors to the Queensland Art Gallery's Asia-Pacific Triennial will be able to participate in the exhibition online thanks to the Virtual Triennial , an exciting new component of The Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT3). The Virtual Triennial features information and documentation about APT3 and also showcases work by artists who use the Internet to create and present their work. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for the Arts, the Honourable Matt Foley MLA said the online art shows the dynamism of new media art practice in the Asia-Pacific region. Through a partnership with Multimedia Art Asia Pacific (MAAP99), the Virtual Triennial presents the work of artists engaging with these new technologies. "Media arts is emerging as a popular and powerful tool for artists, so including the digital dimension is a natural progression for the APT," said Mr Foley. "When you see these works, the creative potential of digital media is apparent." MAAP99 has drawn on experts both within Australia and overseas to create a diverse program of digital works, while the Virtual Triennial/Screen Culture Advisory panel has coordinated the screen-based works included. "The Virtual Triennial not only expands the scope of the Asia-Pacific Triennial, but also allows immediate online participation for audiences around the world this makes APT3 a truly global event." said Mr Foley. The development of the Virtual Triennial has involved extensive partnerships, with international co-curatorship and inter-cultural collaborations. "The Virtual Triennial will continue to promote cross cultural understanding which is a key aim of the Asia-Pacific Triennial," said Mr Foley. "We anticipate that the Virtual Triennial will attract a new and varied audience both nationally and internationally." Special features of the Virtual Triennial include: detailed profiles on artists participating in APT3; dates and information about all APT3 events; the Beyond the Future Online Discussion Forum an email forum involving leading commentators and artists discussing issues relating to contemporary art and culture, for details email: gallery@qag.qld.gov.au; an exhibition of online artworks; Kids' APT online; performance and lecture extracts; and educational material and conference papers. APT3 information will be available in eight languages. APT3's theme 'Beyond the Future' provides artists with a central point around which ideas can revolve making the inclusion of digital art and the availability of online information especially significant. The artistic issues concerning new technologies will be discussed as part of a the major Conference which will feature more than 50 international and Australian speakers. MAAP99 will run a parallel session which will deal specifically with digital media. The conference will be held from 10-12 September at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Registration is essential and details are available at the APT3 Web site or by calling +61(0) 7 3840 7314.
