Chooks, oblivious to the goings on around them, are scattered throughout the composition, busily foraging for food or strutting before the glossy black rooster that surveys the scene. Within the work, no animal is featured over any other. While a pecking order would surely exist amongst the chooks within the natural hierarchy of the farmyard, the work gives the impression that the artist (like the farmer) gives no animal preferential treatment.
