International Awards for QAGOMA Kids' Books
Books published for young readers by the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) have been recognised by prestigious national and international awards for children's book publishing and design.

QAGOMA Director Tony Ellwood said the development of books for children was an extension the Gallery's renowned Children's Art Centre exhibition program, and had been made possible by generous support from The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.

'The book Surrealism for Kids, published in conjunction with last year's 'Surrealism: The Poetry of Dreams' exhibition from the Musée nationale d'art modern, Centre Pompidou, Paris, received a prestigious Golden Lamp Award at the Association of Educational Publishers Awards in Washington, DC this week,' Mr Ellwood said.

'Surrealism for Kids was recognised as the best title in the Supplemental Resources category.

'The book also won a bronze medal in the international 2012 Independent Publisher Book Awards and was shortlisted for awards in the 2012 Australian Publisher's Association (APA) Book Design Awards, and the Children's Book Council of Australia Awards to be announced in August 2012.

'Surrealism for Kids, which introduces young readers to leading surrealist artists and presents the games used as inspiration by the Surrealists themselves, will also be published in a French translation by the Centre Pompidou to coincide with an upcoming exhibition in Paris.'

Mr Ellwood said another title, Drawing Life for Kids: My Art Journal, was recently named the Best Designed Children's Non-Fiction Book at the APA Book Design Awards 2012.

'Published as an extension of the exhibition 'Matisse: Drawing Life', the popular art journal was also nominated for the Best Designed Children's Cover in the APA Book Design Awards, and for a Distinguished Achievement Award in the US Association of Educational Publishers Awards.

'Previously, the Children's Art Centre's first title, 21st Century Art for Kids, published alongside 2010–11's '21st Century: Art in the First Decade' exhibition received an honourable mention in the Education Resources category of the American Association of Museums (AAM) Design Awards 2011.

'These books combine art history, biographical information on artists and hands-on drawing and making activities which connect young readers with art in a meaningful way, and extend the art experience beyond the Gallery,' Mr Ellwood said.

Upcoming books for young readers from the Gallery include Portrait of Spain for Kids, in conjunction with the exhibition 'Portrait of Spain: Masterpieces from the Prado' in July and a Kids' APT title to accompany 'The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' in December.
