INTERNATIONAL DESIGN EXHIBITIONS ANNOUNCED FOR 2013 AT QAG

The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art today announced that two exclusive-to-Brisbane design exhibitions from leading international museums would be highlights of its 2013 program.

Gallery Acting Director Suhanya Raffel said Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) would show 'Quilts 1700-1945', an exhibition of British quilt-making from London's Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) from June 15 to September 22, 2013, followed by 'California Design 1930-1965: Living in a Modern Way' from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from November 2, 2013 to February 9, 2014.

'The design focus of these exhibitions is part of QAGOMA's consideration of all facets of contemporary visual culture, and builds on the success of previous surveys of fashion and architecture including 'Place Makers: Contemporary Queensland Architects' (2008), 'Easton Pearson' (2009), 'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones' (2010) and 'Valentino, Retrospective - Past/Present/Future' (2010),' Ms Raffel said.

'After 'The 7th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art' closes on 14 April 2013, GOMA and QAG will be transformed with a wonderfully diverse program of exhibitions and Collection displays and Children's Art Centre projects, and the Gallery will continue touring exhibitions to regional Queensland.

'The Xstrata Coal Queensland Artists' Gallery program at QAG will include 'Artist's Choice', an exhibition curated by respected Queensland artist Michael Zavros, 'Ruth Stoneley: A Stitch in Time', to coincide with 'Quilts 1700-1945', and an exhibition of works by distinguished Queensland photographer Richard Stringer.'

Ms Raffel said Collection exhibitions at QAG would include works from the Gallery holdings by eminent Australian landscape painter Fred Williams from November 2013 to March 2014, and a display of international photography dating from 1850 to 1975, showing from May to October 2013.

'At GOMA, exhibitions and Collection displays will demonstrate the strength and breath of Indigenous Australian Art, and the depth of the Gallery's Contemporary Collections,' she said.

'My Country, I Still Call Australia Home: Contemporary Art from Black Australia', a major exhibition across the ground floor of GOMA from June 1 to October 6, 2013, examines the associations and interpretations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists have with country, and 'Death and Life: rakuny ga walnga' from May 26 to late 2013, looks at how the cyclical nature of life is reflected in Arnhem Land art.

From November 2013, GOMA will see the return of two of the Gallery's most popular major artist commissions: Celeste Boursier-Mougenot's from here to ear (v.13) 2010, featuring live finches nesting amongst specially constructed musical instruments; and Kathy Temin's immersive synthetic white fur environment My monument: white forest 2008.

The Children's Art Centre at GOMA will feature two solo artist projects coinciding with major exhibitions, one by an Australian Indigenous artist and one by a senior international artist.

Regional Queensland travelling exhibitions from the Collection in 2013 are Lloyd Rees: Life and Light, continuing its two-year tour, and a new exhibition of ten bronze and brass busts from senior Chinese/Australian artist Ah Xian's Metaphysica series.
