CELEBRATION OF JAPANESE FASHION DRAWS TO A CLOSE AT GOMA
The Gallery of Modern Art’s major summer exhibition, ‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion’ enters its final weeks with an exclusive performance by legendary Japanese avant-garde artist and musician Cornelius and a two-for-one ticket offer.

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said the exhibition, which runs until Sunday 15 February, has been a great success with Brisbane fashionistas.

‘Future Beauty’ has been part of the Gallery’s summer focus on contemporary Japanese art and design, which also includes the Collection-based exhibition ‘We can make another future: Japanese art since 1989’ and the beloved Children’s Art Centre installation, Yayoi Kusama’s The obliteration room,’ said Mr Saines.

‘There are still three Friday nights of our popular Up Late events to go before ‘Future Beauty’ must close on Sunday 15 February,’ said Mr Saines.

This Friday night, Gallery visitors have the rare opportunity to catch Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada), performing live with a full band, when he returns to Australia to present salyu x salyu, the creative collaboration with Japanese recording artist Salyu.

On 6 February, a double bill of Australian talent will feature a sumptuous performance from producer, vocalist and songwriter Oscar Key Sung, and the ambient dream-pop of three-piece electronic indie band MTNS, before indie pop four-piece Last Dinosaurs bring their energetic, upbeat melodies to close the Up Late series on 13 February.

Visitors to the Gallery during the final weeks of Up Late also have the chance to hear from ground breaking designers and fashion identities in the ‘Fashion in Action’ floor talks and receive a Future Beauty-inspired makeover from the LylaClare Style Team.

For the final weeks, the Gallery has also introduced a two-for-one ticket offer, available on Tuesdays from the exhibition ticket desk.

Closing weekend celebrations will include the final Future Fashion Sundays event, including a Fabric and Garment swap hosted by The Stitchery Collective, an Art and Fashion one-on-one floor talk with local Queensland artist Michael Zavros and Gail Reid, the designer behind Brisbane fashion label Gail Sorronda, plus a curator’s talk and a hands-on fashion illustration workshop.

The Comme des Garçons Pocket store, exclusive to GOMA for the duration of the exhibition, will also close Sunday 15 February. The dedicated ‘Pocket’ is the cult Japanese label’s first Queensland retail space and first in a gallery environment.

During the exhibition, Principal Sponsor Audi Australia transformed the interior of an A3 Cabriolet to become a literal work of art, inspired from the colours and shapes of traditional Japanese modes of dress.

Anna Burgdorf, General Manager of Corporate Communications at Audi Australia said that progressive design has been an Audi hallmark for many years, especially in style icons like the TT Coupe and A3 Cabriolet.

‘Our support of ‘Future Beauty’ was an excellent fit for our brand, and it highlights the reason why we value our partnership with GOMA. It gives us a great opportunity for the brand to engage people with art and artists,’ she said.

The exhibition has been made possible thanks to the support of Tourism and Events Queensland as the exhibition’s Principal Partner and Audi Australia as Principal Sponsor. The Gallery also acknowledges Supporting Sponsor Gadens.

‘Future Beauty’ was first conceived for display at the Barbican Art Gallery, London, and has subsequently toured to Haus der Kunst, Munich; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; the Seattle Art Museum and the Peabody Essex Museum in the United States; and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto before showing at GOMA in Brisbane.

Tickets are $20.00 for Adults, Concession $16.00, booking fees apply when purchased in advance. Two-for-one ticket offer continues on Tuesdays until 10 February 2015; discounted tickets must be purchased at the ‘Future Beauty’ ticket desk at GOMA.
