Screening & lecture: A brief history of video art

This lecture, presented by Mark Pennings, will consider some central issues and key works in the history of video art over the last 40 years. The video works of artists like Nam June Paik, Will Wegman, Bill Viola and Stan Douglas have explored a number of themes including the nature of self in video formats, nature as a mediated experience and the impact of televisual framing and narrative on our understanding of the world. Mark Pennings is a lecturer in visual arts at the Queensland University of Technology’s Creative Industries, focusing on modern and postmodern art, consumer culture and video art and culture.
