About 'Story Place'

Welcome to the website for ‘Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest’. This major survey exhibition of historical and contemporary indigenous art from Queensland’s Cape York Peninsula was held at the Queensland Art Gallery from 25 July to 9 November 2003. The exhibition was visited by 142 994 people, including 19 518 children.

Knowledge of ‘story places’ – places of spiritual or cultural significance – is passed from generation to generation in Indigenous culture. Expressed through oral traditions, dance, ceremony and art, these unique stories of the people of Cape York form the heart of this exhibition. ‘Story Place’ brought together more than 300 historical and contemporary works of art - sculpture, painting, works on paper, ceramic, fibre and ceremonial objects – by more than 80 artists.

This exhibition was the realisation of more than two years’ research and collaboration between the Queensland Art Gallery and the Indigenous people of Cape York. This collaboration was recognised when ‘Story Place’ won the joint venture large business category of the 2003 Queensland Government Reconciliation Awards for Business.

Regional Tour

A selection of works from the ‘Story Place’ exhibition will tour regional Queensland in 2004.
