Information for teachers

‘Story Place: Indigenous Art of Cape York and the Rainforest’ is Australia’s first major survey exhibition of historical and contemporary art work from Cape York. Works from the Peninsula’s three cultural regions, west Cape, east Cape and the rainforest are featured. This exhibition is suitable for early childhood, primary and secondary students.

‘Story Place’ features more than 300 historical and contemporary works of art, including a selection of shields, fibre works, sculptures, paintings and works on paper. It highlights and celebrates the intrinsic links between Indigenous visual art, ceremony, dance and culture.

Resources

An education resource kit is available free-of-charge for all pre-booked student groups. Pre-booked guided tours of the exhibition are available at no extra cost. You can also download the education resource kit online.

‘Googi’s Place’ features interesting and fun activities and games for children. Activities include:

  • Make a rubbing of textures from Cape York’s natural environment — from crocodile skin and fish scales, to rainforest leaves and milkwood grain.
  • Learn some Indigenous words and their meanings in ‘Googi Spin’.
  • Help put a crocodile and dingo back together (from the inside out!) in a Bone Puzzle activity.
  • Try your hand at weaving with natural and man-made fibres.
  • Discover rock art stories of the Quinkan spirits from far north Queensland.
  • View original illustrations of ‘The Rainbow Serpent’ story by artists Percy Trezise and Goobalathaldin (Dick Roughsey).

Extensive video and photographic documentation has occurred at each stage of the development of the project. Documentary material incorporated into the exhibition includes interviews with artists, community elders and representatives, images of the landscape and environment of Cape York Peninsula, and art production.

In addition, the Gallery has produced a comprehensive catalogue of the exhibition. This publication is available through the Queensland Art Gallery Store.
