The Apocalypse
, a graphic masterpiece of Albrecht
Dürer’s early career, was essentially an ‘artist’s
book’, illustrating the text of the New Testament’s
Book of Revelation. The Gallery held nine works
from this series until this year, when two more were
acquired thanks to the generosity of the Airey family.
The remaining five woodcut prints were the focus
of the 2013 Foundation Appeal, which is profiled
on page 89.
New York photographer Marvin Newman’s (b.1927)
‘Coney Island’ 1953 and ‘Wall Street’ 1956 series
appear as if they were a sequence of film stills shot
on location during the making of an ambiguous
film noir. Shot on 35mm Kodachrome colour slide
film, which produced a distinct, subtle colour tone,
and made using only the available natural light.
Newman’s street photography was ground breaking
for the era. The Gallery recently acquired four prints
from ‘Coney Island’ and a complete set of five
prints from ‘Wall Street’.
