Takahiro Iwasaki’s
Reflection Model (Perfect Bliss)
2010–12 is a miniature recreation of Phoenix Hall,
part of Japan’s famed Byodo-in Temple complex.
It reproduces the building’s reflection in its traditional
mirror pond as a physical object, and is presented
suspended from the ceiling, appearing as a three-
dimensional mirrored image floating in space.
This dreamlike doubling invites consideration of
the work beyond the artist’s superb technical skill.
This work was acquired with the support of Michael
Sidney Myer.
Our 2013–14 summer exhibition, ‘Falling Back to
Earth’, featured two major commissioned works
by leading international artist Cai Guo-Qiang, both
inspired by the landscapes of southeast Queensland.
The centrepiece of the exhibition —
Heritage
2013 —
features 99 replicas of animals from around the
world, gathered together to drink from a blue lake
surrounded by pristine white sand, reminiscent of the
lakes of Moreton Bay’s islands.
Heritage
was acquired
for the Gallery’s Collection with the generous support
of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Diversity
Foundation and the QAGOMA Foundation.
