Without doubt, the Queensland Government is our greatest partner. I thank Campbell
Newman
MP
, the Premier of Queensland, and Ian Walker
MP
, Minister for Science,
Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts, for their support — the
Arts for All
Queenslanders
strategy and
Cultural Precinct Policy
, both launched in 2013, provide a
clear and decisive framework for what we do and how we do it. I welcome Sue Rickerby,
Director‑General of the Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the
Arts, and acknowledge her predecessors Andrew Garner and Philip Reed; and I am grateful
to Kirsten Herring, Deputy Director-General, Arts Queensland, and Evan Hill, who acted
in this role for a period, along with the Executive and staff of Arts Queensland who have
assisted us in our activities in so many ways. I recognise the contribution to the Gallery of
Stephen Gregg, Chairman, former and current Chief Executive Officer Steven Wright and
Leanne Coddington, and the team of Tourism and Events Queensland. We already enjoy
strong working relationships and I know these will continue to flourish as we endeavour
to grow cultural tourism in Queensland.
The Gallery’s governing body, the Queensland Art Gallery Board of Trustees, has been
an ardent advocate this year and I personally thank the Chair, Professor Susan Street,
AO
,
for her enthusiasm and perceptive insights. Together with the Executive Management
Team and our talented staff, we have begun to articulate a new direction for this
dynamic institution, one that will provide memorable and transformative experiences
for our audiences.
As you look back on 2013, you will see glimpses of our aspirations for the future. In early
2014 we will exceed ten million visitors since GOMA opened and I hope you will join us as
we set our sights on becoming the leading institution for the contemporary art of Australia,
Asia and the Pacific.
