APT6 CINEMA
SCREENINGS: Wednesday 20 January – Tuesday 2 February 2010
WHERE: Australian Cinémathèque, Gallery of Modern Art
COST: Admission Free

Promised Lands - Return of the Poet
At the juncture between West Asia and Eastern Europe, the overlapping cultural territories of Armenia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kurdistan and Georgia are the focus of debates on the legacies of occupation and genocide. In the face of these histories, Return of the Poet presents works that highlight the significance of enlivening and passing on cultural practices and traditions in the contemporary world and that celebrate resilient humanity, landscape and community in an allegorical register that creates new cinematic languages.

Rithy Panh
Rithy Panh’s films centre on life in post-Khmer Rouge Cambodia and the struggle to reconcile the country’s traumatic history with contemporary urban and rural experiences. Working across documentary and dramatic features, Panh’s films explore individual and collective stories that give an emotional and material texture to the history and experiences of the Cambodian people.

n addition to the above, the Australian Cinémathèque is also screening the films of Takeshi Kitano on Fridays at 8.00pm in conjunction with Bar GoMA: Asian Pop and continues to present APT6 Cinema project, The Cypress and the Crow: 50 Years of Iranian Animation.

Iranian animations by Seyyed Morteza Ahadi and Farkhondeh Torabi are screening continuously during the APT6 exhibition in The Fairfax Gallery (Gallery 1.1) at GoMA.
