This month the ‘Fairytales and Fables’ program celebrates depictions of animals in folklore; with anthropomorphic animals and protagonists who’ve been physically transformed, voluntarily or not, into animal form through magical intervention. From the furry anarchic trickster in The Story of the Fox 1930, the faun of the labyrinth in Pan’s Labyrinth 2006 to the tortured prince bound in the body of a beast in the fairytale Beauty and the Beast 1946, these animal forms provide the plot device and moral lesson of the tales.
The program also features a whimsical retelling of The Fabulous Baron Münchausen 1961, a live action and animated film which inspired Terry Gilliam’s 1988 version, and the restored Jacques Demy classic films Donkey Skin 1970 and The Pied Piper 1972. |
