SURVEY CELEBRATES QUEENSLAND PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD STRINGER
The architecture, history and people of Queensland will be on display as part of the exhibition 'The Pleasure of Place: Photographs by Richard Stringer' at the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) from October 26 to March 16, 2014.

Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) Director Chris Saines said the survey exhibition, presented in the Glencore Queensland Artists' Gallery, would feature more than 75 works spanning 40 years of eloquent image-making by renowned photographer and teacher Richard Stringer.

To complement the Gallery's existing collection of photographs, 25 works for the exhibition will be generously gifted to the Gallery by the artist, through the QAGOMA Foundation.

'These works, including many never before exhibited, offer a focused lens through which to view the evolution and character of Queensland — from the decay of disused industrial landscapes to the rapid growth of the city and the people who reside there,' Mr Saines said.

'Stringer's early training and practice as an architect gave him an eye for intricate detail, a pronounced proficiency for composition and lighting and a sensitivity to the built environment, all of which are on display here.

'Among his subjects are historic moments including the 1974 Brisbane floods, the construction of the cultural precinct at South Bank during the 1980s, and iconic local buildings including the Regent Theatre and the Cloudland Ballroom.'

Mr Saines said the exhibition was the latest in the ongoing Glencore Queensland Artists' Gallery program, a partnership that enables QAGOMA to tell the stories of the state's important artists.

'Glencore's valuable support allows us to pursue a core part of our mission: the research and exhibition of the work of artists who have helped shape Queensland as we know it,' he said.

The exhibition is accompanied by a publication featuring essays by the artist; exhibition curator Michael Hawker, Associate Curator, Australian Art; and Sally Foster, Assistant Curator, International Art.

At 2.30pm on Saturday October 26, exhibition curator Michael Hawker will explore the remarkable achievements of photographer Richard Stringer in a free talk in the QAG lecture theatre.
