MUSICAL PERFORMANCES ANNOUNCED FOR ‘DAVID LYNCH: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS’ AT GOMA.
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) today announced two new music performances, including a reimagining of the music of 1990s cult television show Twin Peaks, will have their world premiere at the Gallery in conjunction with the major exhibition ‘David Lynch: Between Two Worlds’.

Commissioned by QAGOMA to accompany the exhibition, the special events include two performances by American band Xiu Xiu on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 April, and a performance by HEXA, a new collaboration between Brisbane-based composer Lawrence English and Xiu Xiu frontman, singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, on Sunday 19 April.

QAGOMA Director Chris Saines said the live performances would give Gallery visitors a chance to appreciate the enduring influence of Lynch’s work on a new generation of musicians.

‘Lynch’s experiments with sound and music, as well as the iconic soundtracks to his films are a focus of the exhibition and we are excited to be working with both local and international acts to interpret this material for visitors,’ said Mr Saines.

Acclaimed experimental band Xiu Xiu, led by Stewart and featuring Angela Seo and Shayna Dunkelman, draw on a range of influences from Japanese manga to British post-punk.

Jamie Stewart will then work with Brisbane-based sound engineer, curator and composer Lawrence English to present HEXA, a new collaboration exploring the physicality of sound and its abilities to infiltrate and occupy the body.

HEXA will present a composition responding to Lynch’s photographs of disused factories and the ruins of industry featured in ‘Between Two Worlds’. It is made in the spirit of Lynch’s own industrial soundscapes, including ‘The Air is on Fire’ featured in the QAGOMA exhibition.

José Da Silva, Senior Curator and Head of the Australian Cinémathèque, QAGOMA, said throughout his career David Lynch had explored the use of sound and music to create mood and foster emotion.

‘The Xiu Xiu performances will interpret the music of Twin Peaks, giving the original composition and songs by Angelo Badalamenti and Lynch a breathtaking makeover for the 25th anniversary of the television series.

‘Audiences familiar with the eerie and romantic tones of the soundtracks will be given an entirely new perspective on the music, one emphasising its chaos, drama and fear. Xiu Xiu’s interpretation will be a mix of post-punk and synth pop, classical and experimental styles.

‘HEXA – Factory Photographs will use Lynch’s work as both a literal and metaphoric source, drawing from the texture of Lynch’s photography and the real and imagined histories contained within them,’ said Mr Da Silva.

Curated by Da Silva and developed closely with the artist, ‘David Lynch: Between Two Worlds’ features more than 200 works and is exclusive to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art from 14 March to 7 June. Tickets on sale now. The exhibition is supported by Principal Sponsor Tourism and Events Queensland.
