Carl and Phillip McConnell: Queensland Studio Potters
AUTHOR: |
Glenn R Cooke |
PAGES: |
8-page brochure |
Carl and Phillip McConnell are Queensland’s most significant potters working within the framework of English and Japanese pottery traditions established by Englishman Bernard Leach, and Carl McConnell (1926–2003) came to be regarded as Queensland’s most important potter of the generation after World War Two. His eldest son, Phillip (b.1947), followed in his father’s footsteps, trained with him, and established a career of equal significance. Both superb ceramic technicians, Carl and Phillip experimented with traditional Chinese and Japanese methods to produce remarkably diverse oeuvres.
This illustrated exhibition brochure features an essay by Glenn R Cooke, Research Curator, Queensland Heritage, and accompanies an exhibition of the same name, which acknowledges the individual strength of the artists’ works and their support of the Gallery’s Collection.
‘Carl and Phillip McConnell: Queensland Studio Potters’ is on display in the Xstrata Coal Queensland Artists' Gallery (Gallery 14), QAG, from 17 March to 24 June 2012. Read more

164 pages paperback colour illustrations |
Modern Woman: Daughters and Lovers 1850–1918: Drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris is a beautifully illustrated publication with drawings by some of the leading artists of the French Belle Époque — Pierre Bonnard, Edgar Degas, Édouard Manet, Jean–Francois Millet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Auguste Rodin and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
An essay by the exhibition’s curator, Isabelle Julia, the Musée d’Orsay’s Curator in Charge, Department of Graphic Arts, investigates the expressive medium of drawing and various aspects of modern life through images of maternity, women in love and alone, portraits, nudes and women at leisure — in city streets, cafes and on the stage.

Artlines magazine: The Women Issue
Issue 1–2012 (March–May) |
PAGES: |
52 pages paperback colour illustrations |
The first edition of Artlines for 2012 celebrates women and art, in keeping with the Gallery’s major international exhibition ‘Modern Woman: Daughters and Lovers 1850–1918: Drawings from the Musée d’Orsay, Paris’ and ‘Contemporary Australia: Women’ — the second in the Gallery’s triennial series of contemporary Australian art exhibitions.
In this issue, Melissa Miles writes on the ‘Contemporary Australia: Women’ exhibition, focusing on six exhibiting artists with diverse practices, while Terence Maloon provides insights into the ‘Modern Woman’ exhibition. In her article ‘Love, loss and invisibility’, Margaret Pomeranz — our special guest curator of the film program accompanying ‘Contemporary Australia’ — considers representations of women in Australian film, and David Burnett reveals the career of Swiss-born nineteenth-century painter Angelica Kauffman in his regular feature on selected works from the Gallery's international collection.
Nine new acquisitions also feature in this edition — including Wakartu Cory Surprise’s Mimpi 2011; the Gallery’s first 3-D video work, Stranded 2011 by Warwick Thornton; and a rare bronze sculpture by Edgar Degas, a promised gift of the estate of Margaret Olley, AC — as well as the latest news from the Gallery and our regular mix of exhibitions, programs and reviews.
Artlines is published four times a year (March, June, September and December).
