Source: Queensland State Library In a quest to reclaim the past, Ephraim Bani travels to the great museums of Europe to retrieve ceremonial tribal masks exposing the complexities of international indigenous politics. Saturday 4 2.00pm Films by R. V. Ramani 60 mins Born in 1957, R. V. Ramani has worked as a photo-journalist in Bombay and graduated from the Film and TV Institute of India in 1985. Since then he has produced a number of documentaries, short films and features. This selection of his work from the Whispering Images series explores Ramani’s impressionistic, subjective and independent style. The two films, Face like a man and Through the window explore artists in the process of developing their and their work. Sunday 5 2.00pm Beyond the Future: the making of apt3 ABC Television, Prod: Jack King This documentary examines the development and realisation of the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, 1999. Includes interviews with artists and curators. Cut to the city A selection of video works by artists inspired and controlled by the speed and rhythms of the city. Includes works by Hugh McClean, Rosemary Dean Friday 10 12.30pm Tulana Mahu: Shrine to Abundance 30 mins Dir: & Prod: Shane Tohovaka. T V Niue 1999 A documentary which explores the emergence of the Tahiono Arts Collective in Niue. Sat 11 2.00 pm A Sense of Place: short films from New Zealand Curated by Deborah Lawler-Dormer, Director, Moving Image Centre, Auckland. A selection of recent short films specifically programmed to reflect on the APT theme’ Beyond the Future’. Many of the films actively investigate history and look forward to the future using the knowledge learned from examining the past. Works notably in this vein are Rihi and Rhona, Behind Me Is Black and Styx. Interwoven with works of this nature are short films which celebrate the connections and contrasts between different cultural groups as in Ki Te La and Etak, or across cultures due to overarching issues such as that of desire which is explored in Lure. Digital technologies as illustrated in the fast and symbolic Noise or the more humorous shorts DELF and Playing Possum complete this journey beyond the future. All in all, a complex program guaranteed to challenge, entertain and invoke thoughts about living and working in the Pacific. Sun 12 12.30 pm Media Art from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak A selection of experimental and digital media works from Malaysia. Vanishing Point 1999, Hasnul Jamal Saidon 26 min A video projection/installation which questions the imposition of a western linear perspective on the reading of images of nature and traditional culture. Time Passage 1998, Sharkawi Che Din 2:30 min Computer animation is used to evoke a sense of loss and regret for the loss of the natural world as it flows from sunken B25 bomber debris towards a future of abandoned satellites and cities in space. Real time 1999, Fong Wan Loong 15:30 min This work presents a critique of contemporary media-generated reality as the lead character, Amy, moves between daily routine and the fantasies of the virtual world and computer games. Lines of Site 20 min A video by Vanessa Mafé, Markus Siegenthaler and Jondi Keane exploring the sensibilities of different arts practitioners through their interactions and collaborations. Pink Man on Tour 15 min A performance work from Thai artist Manit Sriwanichpoom questioning the marketing and commercialisation of culture. Friday 17 The Golden Cord 55 mins Prod: Hilary Furlong. Ronin Films 1997 This film tells the story of a unique cross-cultural friendship. Ten women artists from the Aboriginal community of Utopia were invited to Brahma Tirta Sari, a leading batik studio in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Golden Cord looks beyond the fascinating detail of the refined technical skills of batik to aspects of the spiritual and social traditions of Java and Aboriginal Australia: two distinct but strangely parallel contemporary cultures resting on timeless foundations. JANUARY 2000 Friday 14 January Taking Pictures 56 mins Les McLaren & Annie Stiven 1996 Ronin Films. Source: Queensland State Library Taking Pictures is a thoughtful look at the way western cameras have represented the lives of Papua New Guineans. McLaren and Stiven are two of a group of filmmakers who have lived and worked in PNG during the past 25 years. Their films have endeavored to reflect Papua New Guinean’s complexity of thought, language and culture using a wide variety of filmic styles and techniques. This film is a fascinating documentary, tracing PNG culture and history from the 1930s to the present. Sunday 16 January The Navigator: a medieval odyssey 87 mins Dir: Vincent Ward, Prod: John Maynard. Ronin Films Villagers from 14th century Cumbria are led by a young boy with second sight into our time to find the meaning of his dream.
