American Impressionism
and Realism: A Landmark
Exhibition from the Met

This exclusive exhibition brought together 71
impressionist and realist works from New York’s
Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a special
selection of 30 works by some of Australia’s
best loved painters.
The exhibition’s curator, Dr H Barbara Weinberg,
the Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American
Paintings and Sculpture at The Metropolitan,
was in Brisbane for the exhibition’s installation
and opening.
‘American Impressionism and Realism’ was
presented in a magnificent series of exhibition
spaces recently refurbished with support from
the Queensland Government.
Highlights included important
portraiture by John Singer Sargent,
optimistic depictions of the city by
Childe Hassam, and the studied
intimacy of Mary Cassatt’s paintings
of women and children.
Among the Australian paintings were some
rarely shown in Brisbane. Tom Roberts, Charles
Conder, Frederick McCubbin, John Russell
and Rupert Bunny were among the Australian
painters.
The exhibition attracted 104 604 visitors.
The exhibition was organised by The Metropolitan
Museum of Art, New York, in collaboration with the
Queensland Art Gallery and Art Exhibitions Australia.
The exhibition was indemnified by the Australian
Government through Art Indemnity Australia.
The exhibition was presented by the Queensland
Government. Principal Sponsor was Mazda Australia
and Principal Donor was Singapore Airlines.
