I would just like to let
you know that I had
a fantastic night on
Friday night at The Met
Up Late. This was the
first time I had been to
one of the night events
and I must say that it
was truly world-class
. . . I was truly inspired
by this event and look
forward to attending
more.

Up Late
The Gallery’s Up Late program
continued to set the scene in Brisbane on
Friday nights with its seductive mix of
art, live music, talks and performances.
Two very successful seasons of Up Late
were held in 2009, attracting more than
15 000 visitors. Highlights of Australia Up
Late, held in conjunction with the exhibition
‘Contemporary Australia: Optimism’ at GoMA,
included a performance by comedians and
social commentators Julian Morrow and
Andrew Hansen from TV’s
The Chaser’s War
on Everything
, and some truly special musical
experiences by artists including Katie Noonan,
Ed Keupper and David McCormack.
At QAG, The Met Up Late celebrated ‘American
Impressionism and Realism: A Landmark
Exhibition from the Met’ to a DJ soundtrack
of American jazz on vinyl — from blues to
Dixieland to 1940s bebop. Live performances
included those by Don Walker (Sydney) and
Brisbane musicians Kate Jacobson and Ben
Salter. A highlight of the speakers’ program
was US Consul General Judith Fergin with her
personal ‘American–Australian story’.
Comedy was an inherent part of the Australia Up Late
program; here, the crowd enjoys a performance by Tripod.
Some of Australia’s best musicians performed at Up Late in 2009 / clockwise from top:
The Reels, Paul Grabowsky, Holly Throsby and Robert Forster.
