‘art, love and life: ethel carrick and
e phillips Fox’ told the story of one of the
most significant artistic marriages and
partnerships in australian art. ethel carrick
and e phillips Fox were impressionist
painters at the turn of the last century,
and the exhibition explored the full range
of their work, from bustling scenes of
markets and beaches to intimate portraits
of families, women and children.
this exhibition examined carrick and Fox’s
works through the prism of their marriage,
and was a continuation of the gallery’s
commitment to new scholarship on
australian art. there was also a substantial
series of public programs that introduced
the themes of the exhibition in innovative
ways and offered a new insight into the
untold story of these artists.
