bringing together contemporary textiles
from the gallery’s australian, asian and
pacific collections, ‘threads: contemporary
textiles and the social Fabric’ celebrated
the ways in which contemporary artists
explore and extend the boundaries of the
textile medium. many of the works draw
on traditional textile practices at the
same time as engaging new technologies,
materials and imagery to reflect and
transform existing social, political and
cultural conditions.
a highlight of the exhibition was 22-metre
ngatu tā’uli (tongan ceremonial barkcloth)
commissioned by the gallery (see also
acquisition highlights page 94).
