On permanent display in the historical
Asian art galleries are folding screens and
a collection of Neolithic ware from Japan
and China. These are augmented by a
focused selection of ceramics from China,
Japan and Korea, representing a lineage
of cultural exchange between Japan and
China. The theme of cultural interaction is
further considered through a suite of
ukiyo-e
prints from Meiji period Japan (1868–1912),
and new acquisitions that consider the
emergence and influence of photography
in Japan, also during the Meiji period.
The display ‘Empire and Image’ features
works demonstrating the influences and
exchange between Britain, Europe and ‘the
East’ during the colonial period, including
ceramics, textiles, furniture, photography
and works on paper. A developing collection
focus considers the British colonial period
in Asia, represented by a carved teak
screen, Company School paintings, and
late nineteenth century photography from
Ceylon, India and Burma.
