ART gALLERY
FounDation
the Queensland art gallery Foundation
raised more than $3.58 million for the
gallery during the 2010–11 financial year.
including donations, bequests, gifted art
works and government funds, these funds
support the gallery’s acquisitions, exhibitions
and programs. thanks to the wonderful
support of Foundation benefactors, 620 art
works were acquired through the Foundation
during the financial year.
Lucile
1937, an important work by
australian surrealist peter purves smith,
was secured through the 2011 Queensland
art gallery Foundation appeal. the portrait
is a key acquisition for the collection
and makes a significant contribution to
the gallery’s holdings of major works
from the modernist period. the generous
contributions of Foundation members and
gallery members ensured this enigmatic
painting’s place in the collection, and we
thank everyone who generously contributed
to the 2011 appeal.
Self portrait
1938 by
nora heysen, which was acquired with the
generous support of philip bacon,
am
, joins
Lucile
as a focus of the ‘modern art and
australia’ display in the australian galleries
of the Queensland art gallery.
sadly, the Foundation lost a valued member
and friend with the passing of margaret
olley,
ac
, in July this year. margaret was a
gifted and inspirational australian artist,
benefactor and Foundation special patron.
the gallery has been privileged to receive
a number of wonderful gifts from margaret
in recent years, including the gift of ethel
carrick Fox’s
On the beach
c.1909 shortly
before margaret passed away. margaret has
left a great legacy which will inspire others
for years to come, and her generous spirit
will long be remembered.
the Foundation continued to receive
tremendous support in 2011 from
president, tim Fairfax,
am
. his generosity
allowed the gallery to acquire
Untitled
2007–08 by cindy sherman and
Wolken
(
Clouds
) 2010 by michael sailstorfer, both
extraordinary additions to the contemporary
international collection. such patronage
is inspiring and helps build the gallery’s
profile in the international arts community.
the tim Fairfax Family Foundation also
continued to provide incredible support for
gallery initiatives, including surrealism
for kids, as well as the drawing room,
children’s publication and tour for the
‘matisse: drawing life’ exhibition. the
generosity of tim Fairfax,
am
, gina Fairfax
and their family has assisted the gallery
in bringing art to life for visitors in both
metropolitan and regional Queensland.
this year the gallery was also fortunate
to receive further outstanding support
from win schubert through the Josephine
Ulrick and win schubert Foundation for the
arts. the generous gift of ian Fairweather’s
Trotting race
c.1956 has added considerable
depth to the gallery’s collection of works by
notable painter ian Fairweather.
in 2011, recent acquisitions of indigenous
australian art were profiled in the collection
display ‘desert painting now: new works
for the collection’ at goma. the gallery
gratefully acknowledges the generosity of
professor John hay,
ac
, and mrs barbara
hay, who supported the acquisition of many
of these works, as well as the invaluable
patronage of cathryn mittelheuser,
am
, and
margaret mittelheuser,
am
, towards the
collection.
