in 2011, the gallery continued to forge
partnerships with international institutions
and agencies, to present the exhibitions
‘surrealism: the poetry of dreams’
with the centre pompidou, paris, ‘henri
cartier-bresson: the man, the image and
the world’ in conjunction with the henri
cartier-bresson Foundation and magnum
photos, paris; and ‘matisse: drawing life’, in
partnership with arts exhibitions australia
and the bibliothèque nationale de France.
the gallery and art exhibitions australia
has also secured exclusive seasons at
Qag and goma in 2012 for the exhibitions
‘modern woman: daughters and lovers
1850–1918’ from the musée d’orsay, paris
and ‘portrait of spain: masterpieces from
the prado’ – the first exhibition from the
esteemed museo nacional del prado to be
presented in australia.
For the first time, Queensland’s leading
cultural institutions, the Queensland
performing arts centre, Queensland
museum, state library of Queensland and
Queensland art gallery collaborated to
present a centre-wide series of exhibitions
and programs. 'the torres strait islands:
a celebration' was an unprecedented
celebration of torres strait islander culture
and was accompanied by the first major
joint publication, which showcased the
outstanding collections and performance
programs of each organisation. the cultural
centre agencies also collaborated with local
and torres strait island-based communities
to organise the opening weekend
program of celebrations which featured
a comprehensive program of exhibitions,
workshops, tours and performances by local
and torres strait performers. more than 100
artists performed throughout the precinct
over the weekend 1 and 2 July.
a number of the gallery’s film and public
program initiatives this year have benefited
from partnerships with industry leaders,
such as abc radio national’s contribution
to the goma talks program and a new
tomorrow: Visions of the Future in cinema
and the savage eye: surrealism and
cinema which were presented by the
courier mail. a full listing of all sponsors,
supporters and partners is included on
pages 110-115.
