Annual Review 2012 - page 36

The Gallery’s Australian Cinémathèque presents
retrospective and thematic film programs and exhibitions
featuring the work of influential filmmakers and artists.
It is the only one of its kind in an Australian art museum.
In 2012 the Australian Cinémathèque
presented three ticketed programs
that were extremely well attended,
attracting a dedicated following.
Patrons spent time in the Audi
GOMA Bar followed by a feature film
screening in one of GOMA’s cinemas.
Drawn to Screen: Graphic Novels,
Comics and Serials brought together
over 60 films from around the
world which charted the shift from
the printed page to the screen, and
explored how comic genres and
themes challenge personal and
cultural expectations.
The films of one of the most
charismatic figures of contemporary
Spanish cinema — Pedro Almodóvar
— were celebrated in a retrospective
coinciding with the landmark
exhibition ‘Portrait of Spain’ from
Madrid’s esteemed Prado Museum.
Simultaneously flamboyant,
humorous and deeply earnest,
Almodóvar’s films contain some
of cinema’s most memorable
stories and characters.
Get Down! Dance on Film since the
1970s celebrated the depiction of
dance onscreen with over 40 films,
from lavish musicals to cult classics.
A special
Grease
(1978) singalong
screening was a sell-out.
Free programs included Midnight
Sun: Film and Video from the North,
a focus on contemporary video art
and cinema from Scandinavia; and
100 Years of Spanish Cinema, a
landmark survey featuring more
than 100 films.
The Gallery worked with esteemed
film critic Margaret Pomeranz to
curate Contemporary Australia:
Women in Film. This free film
program, sponsored by Gadens, was
launched with a discussion between
Pomeranz and award-winning
Australian directors Louise Alston,
Gillian Armstrong and Ana Kokkinos
on the opening weekend.
