Ipswich

In 1851 the port of Ipswich, on the Bremer River (a tributary of the Brisbane River) was the distribution centre for the Darling Downs and the Brisbane and Lockyer Valleys. As this is Martens’s only known drawing of Ipswich this suggests that it was simply a transit point for him.

Martens probably travelled by paddle-steamer from Brisbane to Ipswich. The steamers carried wool from the Darling Downs to Brisbane and the hut near the wharf was erected in 1848 to
store it.
