exploring the themes and subjects to which
henri matisse — one of the twentieth-
century’s greatest artists — repeatedly
returned throughout his long career,
‘matisse: drawing life’ presented a unique
insight into the artist’s daily practice of
drawing.
this unprecedented exhibition of matisse’s
drawings and prints brought together more
than 300 works from international, national
and private collections, demonstrating the
extraordinary range and depth of the artist's
engagement with graphic mark-making.
‘matisse: drawing life’ also featured a
selection of documentary material from
the James c sourris,

, collection of rare
books, purchased with funds from James
c sourris,

, through the Queensland art
gallery Foundation 2011, and held in the
Queensland art gallery research library.
the exhibition was curated especially
for the gallery by céline chicha-castex,
curator of modern and contemporary
prints, department of prints and
photographs, bibliothèque nationale de
France, paris, and emilie ovaere-corthay,
independent curator. the Queensland
art gallery and art exhibitions australia
proudly collaborated with the bibliothèque
nationale de France to realise this
ambitious project, and presented these
works, exclusively in brisbane, for the fifth
anniversary of the opening of the goma.
