First Peoples and Black Cinema

This survey of first peoples and black cinema, presented in
conjunction with ‘My Country, I Still Call Australia Home:
Contemporary Art from Black Australia’, included works from
Australia, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Canada/Nunavik Canada,
the United States/Anowarakowa and the United Kingdom.
Claire Denis

The most comprehensive Australian retrospective of acclaimed
director Claire Denis, regarded as one of France’s most distinctive
and humanist filmmakers. Her films approach subjects of cultural
and political tension, as well as individual alienation.
Oscar Micheaux: Pioneer of Black Cinema
12 July – 4 August 2013 | GOMA Cinema | Free admission
A live music and film program profiling Oscar Micheaux
(1884–1951), the first major African American filmmaker was
scheduled to coincide with ‘My Life as I Live It: First Peoples and
Black Cinema’. The program featured live piano accompaniment
by Australian musician Paul Hankinson.
The Otolith Group
6–20 July 2013 | GOMA Cinema | Free admission
The Otolith Group was founded in 2002 by Anjalika Sagar and
Kodwo Eshun. Their work variously includes curating, programming,
publishing and filmmaking, and is underpinned by an ongoing
exploration of the relationships between contemporary art theory,
practice and exhibition. This program celebrated a decade of
filmmaking by The Otolith Group.
