‘Harvest’ will explore the production, consumption and symbolism
of food as a subject for art, unpacking everything from the global
food trade and fast and slow food movements to the labour involved
in its production and distribution. The echo of international trade and
colonialism in seventeenth-century still lifes, and the establishment
of identity by new Australians through depictions of working the
land will be contrasted with the connections between food, country
and cultural knowledge expressed in the work of Indigenous
Australian artists. Drawing on the breadth of the QAGOMA
Collection, ‘Harvest’ will consider how contemporary artists from
around the world explore the flow of produce and the politics and
symbolism of food.
