The land and its natural features can wield powerful aesthetic
and cultural influences on Australia’s Indigenous artists.
‘Terrain’ explores these relationships through the colours, textures,
lines and forms of their paintings, weaving, body adornments and
sculptures in the Gallery’s Collection. The exhibition will include
richly coloured pandanus baskets, mats and fish traps from Arnhem
Land, and fibre sculptures by the three leading Aboriginal fibre
artists Yvonne Koolmatrie (SA), Lena Yarinkura (NT) and Shirley
Macnamara (QLD). A rare collection of feathered body adornments
from the island of Galiwin’ku will complement exquisite Tasmanian
shell necklaces and incised Bardi pearl-shell pendants from the
north coast of Western Australia.
‘Terrain’ will showcase contemporary Indigenous creativity by a
broad range of artists from strongly contrasting places and histories.
